Are you looking for healthy and delicious meals or even vegetarian options for your kids and yourself while traveling in Kyoto? There’s a well-known kid-friendly, the organic cafe here in Kyoto that can surely satisfy you.
Mumokuteki (which means purposeless or aimless in Japanese) is a cozy, LOHAS lifestyle store located in Teramachi shopping arcade in downtown Kyoto. Besides a café and fresh-food market space on the second floor, it also sells food, clothing and zakka (miscellaneous products) on the first floor, and antique goods in the basement.
Teramachi Shopping Arcade – A Shopper’s Paradise
You can get to Mumokuteki by walking through Teramachi shopping arcade. The shopping street lies between the south of Kyoto City Hall and Shijo Street and is one of the most popular shopping areas in downtown Kyoto. Teramachi has a rich history as it was home to many temples and shrines in the past. In fact, Teramachi actually means ‘temple town’. You can have fun shopping with your family at clothing shops, bookshops and eateries that line the street. You can also walk over to the all-time favorite Nishiki Market nearby for local food and snacks. Because it is a covered pedestrian street, Teramachi is perfect for families even on rainy days.
Mumokuteki – A One-Stop Shop for Natural Products and Food
Mumokuteki has a bright and welcoming entrance. When you enter the store from Teramachi shopping arcade on the first floor, you will find Mumokuteki Goods & Wear.
First Floor- Mumokuteki Goods & Wear
If you are a fan of natural and sustainable products, you will be delighted to find a wide range of such kinds of food, clothes, zakka and plants for sale. There are also many natural food products that are vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Since the brand advocates wholesome living, all the food products sold here are additive-free. I’m sure this is reassuring especially when you are buying these products for your children and yourself.
Second floor- &Market
On the second floor of Mumokuteki is a mini grocery store called &Market that offers a wide range of organic products including fresh fruits, vegetables, seasonings, rice, milk, juices and baby food. You can pick up some yummy and healthy snacks for your family here.
Second floor- Mumokuteki Café – Great for going with kids and for vegetarian options
Mumokuteki Café is very kid-friendly while being relaxing and cosy at the same time. The service here is super friendly with a very attentive staff. The café has a spacious feeling as it is brightly lit with ample natural light, creating a cheery atmosphere.
The meals here are all healthily prepared using addictive-free and organic ingredients, and there are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options you can choose for your children and yourself. Furthermore the meals are very delicious and affordable. They even have a very appetising and healthy kids menu.
You can take your pick of seating choices from three sections of the café: sofa seating, main area with regular table seating, and a very functional family room, which is great when going with kids.
Family room – perfect for dining with kids
This is the highlight and best part of Mumokuteki Café to me. The family dining room is open to families with children aged six years and below. The space is well-equipped and very kid-friendly (and mom-friendly as well). Parents with babies and toddlers will be delighted to find a children’s books and toys section, plenty of furniture suitable for young kids, a washing corner, children’s utensils and even nursing rooms, all conveniently located in the same space. The family room is available for use from 11:30 to 18:00 daily, and it is usually packed during lunch time and especially on weekends and public holidays. It is best to arrive early to avoid the lunch crowd.
Café Menu – something for everyone, including vegetarian, vegan, & gluten free options
Next, let me introduce the food menu. You will be spoilt for choice with the wide selection of Japanese and western style dishes offered. The dishes are prepared using fresh, locally sourced, organic ingredients from Kyoto and other parts of Japan. It’s easy to order since there is an English menu with photos of all the dishes, including several kids meal options. Most dishes are vegan and/or gluten-free and are clearly labelled on the menu, this is a great place to go for vegetarian options.
Mumokuteki is a great shopping and dining spot for families travelling with kids, especially if you want vegetarian and/or vegan options
