Just wanted to post a quick update from Kyoto as people worldwide are dealing with the corona virus pandemic.
Life in Kyoto
Here in Kyoto things have, for the most part, been seemingly normal. However, over the past few days it seems people around the nation are starting to take the warnings and recommendations for social distancing a bit more seriously after the death of a popular comedian over the weekend.
Schools are closed
You may know that schools across Japan have been closed since late February. From the last week of March kids around the country are officially in spring vacation. The new school year begins in early April, but schools in Tokyo are postponing reopening until early May.
Ryokan School in Kyoto
As schools closed suddenly some parents were left trying to find childcare for their young kids. For a week in early March we held a Ryokan School at Watazen Ryokan (Japanese inn). We made a video of the week to share and hope you will watch it. We will continue to make videos to share with our readers about Japan. You can see our first video here.
Regular updates from Kyoto
This is a scary time for people worldwide. We have scheduled posts about traveling in Kyoto, but will also post entries like this one reporting on life in Japan through this worldwide pandemic.
Visit Japan from your home
Even though you may not be able to visit Japan now, we will continue to share photos and information about Kyoto both here and on our Instagram and Facebook pages. We hope you’ll use our pages for a sort of virtual trip during these tough times. If you have any requests for things you would like us to write about in these updates, please leave a comment or send us a message!
