You may think traveling abroad with a baby is hard. But Japan is very popular as a tourist destination for families due to its clean cityscape and good public safety. Especially, Kyoto is a representative city and you can enjoy “Japanese vibe”.
If you use a carrier or stroller, you can go anywhere! Here are some tips for traveling in Kyoto with baby.
You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kyoto throughout the year. But if you are with your baby, you may worry about temperature and clothes. Please refer to the notes below.
Kyoto in this season is very cold. Especially in January and February, the temperature may be below 0 degrees Celsius, so we do not recommend staying outside with your baby for a long time. However, there are many activities that you can enjoy indoors. Also, it’s not as crowded as autumn leaves season, so you can take a leisurely trip. If you are lucky, you might be able to enjoy the beautiful snow scene.
It is getting warmer, but there is a large temperature gap over the course of the day. We recommend you prepare clothes which can be adapted to the temperature changes.
During this season, Japanese cherry blossoms are very beautiful and there are many tourists. Sometimes it is difficult to use strollers, so it may be better to bring a baby carrier if you have one.
The temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius and it is a very comfortable season. Since mosquitoes begin to appear in Japan from this time, we recommend that you bring mosquito repellent goods, or purchase some after arriving in Japan. Babies are more susceptible to mosquitoes than adults because of their high body temperature and soft skin. Most drugstores sell mosquito repellents including mist type and bracelet type.
June is the rainy season, so you may want to prepare a folding umbrella, raincoat, or stroller cover to handle sudden rain! Umbrellas can typically be found easily on rainy days as even convenience stores will put some out to sell for a cheap price.
It’s a very hot season. The temperature is close to 40 ℃ . To prevent heat stroke, you need to drink plenty of cold drinks often and not stay outside for a long time. We recommend that you use UV umbrella and/or wear hats when you go outside for you and your baby.
If you are concerned about strong UV rays, you can purchase sunscreen that can be used by babies at drugstores.
October is still hot but there is a large temperature difference between daytime and nighttime. You should wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off.
In addition, Kyoto in this season is so crowded because of autumn leaves. Just like in spring, it is better to bring a baby carrier rather than using a stroller.
Where you can buy baby items
There are things you need in your travel destination, such as diapers, baby food, and a jacket when it turns out to be colder than you thought it was going to be. Here are some places where you can buy baby items.
AEON Mall Kyoto’s Toys R Us and Babies R Us
Unfortunately, Toys R Us in the United States has gone bankrupt, but the chain is still alive in Japan. You can find Toys R Us on the first floor on the east side of AEON Mall Kyoto, and there is a fountain where children can play in the summer. You can entertain your child at Toys R Us, which is full of children’s favorite toys. They also sell shopping bags that are limited to Kyoto and traditional Japanese kids wear such as yukata and jimbei for summer festivals. They also sell baby items such as diapers and baby food, which can sometimes be hard to find in other stores, so you can rest easy knowing where to go to buy some if you run out during the trip. If you plan to eat in the food court, you may want to purchase some baby food at Toys R Us to take with you to the food court or restaurant later for your baby.
If you go to a large drugstore, you can find most things you need, such as baby food and diapers. Most convenience stores don’t sell baby goods and if they do there isn’t a great selection. Supermarkets sometimes have baby goods, AEON for example, usually has a baby goods section in their stores.
Japanese baby products are very high quality and popular. If you want to have high quality baby goods for your baby or souvenirs, why don’t you go to a department store in Kyoto？
You can have everything from clothes to maternity items.
