When you go on a vacation with your kids you want to have some experiences in your vacation spot that you can’t have anywhere else, right? Let us tell you about some of the cool things you can do or experience with kids in Kyoto. Some you may have heard of already, but some may be new to you. Whatever you do, you are sure to make some great memories with your family if you do any of these cool things in Kyoto!
Ninja Experience at Toei Movie Village (Eiga Mura)
At Toei Movie Studios (Eiga Mura in Japanese) you can see what Japan was like long ago, become a samurai, and enjoy playing different games. They also have various displays of famous characters in Japan. This winter they will have a special event called “Winter character festival.” The dates of the festival are December 28, 2019 – January 5, 2020 plus three more days from January 11th to the 13th. Kids will be excited by the various heroes on display even if they don’t know them.
“Gachapon” are toy machines which you will see all over Japan. At most shopping malls you can find a section with many of these machines. The prices range from 100 yen to as much as 500 yen for some. You can see “gachapon” with toys of Disney characters, Japanese characters, and other random things like food or animals. Kids may take a while to decide which one to try because of all the different choices.
Sushi going round and round
You may have seen restaurants with sushi going around on a conveyor belt of sorts. In Japanese this is called “kaiten sushi.” “Kaiten” means to go round and round. Even if you or your kids aren’t sushi fans, there are “kaiten sushi” restaurants with other items on the menu like noodle dishes and fried chicken. There are even some restaurants which kids really love where the sushi you order comes to you on a special train!
My family’s favorite “kaiten sushi” is Kura Sushi which doesn’t use any preservatives. Kura Sushi is even listed on the NASDAQ.
Try your luck at one of Japan’s Game Centers (arcade)
You may be surprised by the noise and bright lights of game centers (arcades). However, they are a kid’s paradise. There are so many different kinds of games and even more crane machines. You are sure to be surprised at the variety of things you can find in the crane machines. You can find things from toys which kids love to different snacks like chips and cookies and even ice cream! Most games in the game center only take coins, so you will need to use a money changer to change a 1000 yen bill into coins. Some money changers will even accept larger bills like 5,000 yen or 10,000 yen bills.
Look for taxis with 4-leaf clovers
As there are only four taxis with 4-leaf clovers driving around the streets of Kyoto, it is said that if you spot one you will find happiness! If you happen to spot one and get to ride in it, you can receive a sticker or card marking the occasion.
There are also two taxis on the Kyoto streets with 2-leaf clovers, even more rare than the 4-leaf clover taxis.
Ring the bell at a shrine and become even smarter
At various “Tenmangu” shrines around Kyoto, with Kitano Tenmangu being the most famous, very smart people were trained. When visiting the shrines around entrance exam season you will most likely see many students praying for good exam results so that they can get into the high school or university of their choice.
